Knee Bracing for Osteoarthritis & Instability

A Calgary and Southern Alberta Guide

If knee pain or “giving way” is limiting your walks or stairs, a custom-fit brace can assist with getting you back to doing the things you love in life.  It helps offload painful areas and improve stability—often within the first walk test after fitting. We design lighter, low-profile braces using 3D scanning and CAD/CAM, then support you with a clear, simple plan.

When bracing helps (and how it works)

  • Unloader braces can reduce one-sided OA pain (varus/valgus) by shifting load.
  • Stabilizing braces support laxity/instability and confidence on uneven ground. These also can assist with quadriceps weakness or preventing “knee buckling”.
  • Hip support sometimes complements knee bracing for balance and stride.
Your exam, goals, and gait pattern guide the choice—we’ll explain options side-by-side.

Custom vs off-the-shelf

  • Custom targets your exact alignment, shape, and symptoms; best for ongoing OA or ligament laxity.
  • Off-the-shelf can help short-term or milder issues. We’ll advise after assessment.

Your fitting timeline

  • Day 0: Assessment + 3D scan (bring your everyday shoes; cane/walker if used).
  • ~10–12 days: Custom fitting, walk test, comfort checks, written wear plan.
  • 2–4 weeks: Early follow-up; on-the-spot tweaks for slip/rub/pressure spots.
Urgent cases can potentially be expedited—ask us.

Wear-time & daily life (practical plan)

Start with short sessions (e.g., 30–60 minutes) and build up. We coach strap tension, skin checks, stairs/ice safety, and clothing tips so the brace fits under winter layers and boots. If something rubs or slips, we’ll fix it—often in a quick visit.

Caregiver corner

We welcome family at appointments and provide a simple checklist for routines, travel, and maintenance. We align brace wear with physiotherapy for strength and balance.

Funding, coverage & costs

We’re AADL-approved and help with estimates, forms, and extended benefits. Coverage depends on eligibility and authorizer approval; we’ll outline out-of-pocket scenarios up front.

Short FAQ

Q: Will a brace help “bone-on-bone”?
Often yes—by offloading the painful compartment and improving alignment/stability. We set simple goals (pain, distance, stairs) and adjust.

Q: How long do I wear it each day?
We start small and build up based on comfort and goals; you’ll get a written plan.

Q: Is it bulky or hot?
Modern designs are light and breathable. If it pinches/slips, we adjust pads/straps.

Q: What if fit changes with swelling?
We’ll show simple strap adjustments and when to take a short break—then reassess if needed.

Q: How long does it last?
Frames often last years; liners/straps are replaceable as they wear.
